What are cookies?

Cookies are tiny text files that are stored on a user’s browser. Most cookies contain a unique identifier called a cookie ID: a string of characters that websites and servers associate with the browser on which the cookie is stored. This allows websites and servers to distinguish the browser from other browsers that store different cookies, and to recognize each browser by its unique cookie ID in order to identify the browser during the visit or between users sessions.

BRANDCRUMB, in compliance with applicable laws and following the recommendations described by the IAB in the EU’s Self-regulation Online Behavioural Advertising (OBA) Framework, does not collect personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, emails, addresses or phone numbers from the   associated publishers’ network. This network of publishers allow BRANDCRUMB to set cookies in the user browser in order to anonymously identify the user. The data set collected through cookies does not include personal data nor does it include information about users’ political affiliations, philosophical, sexual or religious preferences, ethnic or racial origins, nor trade union memberships or health conditions. BRANCRUMB does not intentionally collect information about people under 13 years of age or any other segment considered sensible by IAB European regulation.

How does BRANDCRUMB use cookies?

BRANDCRUMB uses the information collected through cookies to build marketing profiles and to offer the advertising market a solution for online advertising based on users’ behaviour. This means the development of affinity groups based on anonymous browsing activity on the Internet to deliver ads based on specific interests.

BRANDCRUMB solution allows the definition of user segments in order to identify relevant content, services, and products according to the interests of a specific group of users,  these data could be shared with third parties for the purpose of providing targeting advertising always anonymously.

Measures have been implemented to protect information from unauthorized or unlawful access, use or disclosure, and against accidental loss, damage or destruction. Access to data is restricted to authorized individuals.

When does BRANDCRUMB send cookies to a browser?

BRANDCRUMB sends a cookie to the browser after any impression, click, or other activity that results in a call to the BRANDCRUMB servers. If the browser accepts the cookie, then the cookie is stored on the browser.

Most commonly, BRANDCRUMB sends a cookie to the browser when a user visits a page that shows a BRANDCRUMB hyperlink. Pages with BRANDCRUMB hyperlinks include hyperlink tags that instruct browsers to request hyperlink content from the BRANDCRUMB hyperlink servers. When the servers deliver the hyperlink content, it also sends a cookie.  But a page doesn’t have to show BRANDCRUMB hyperlinks for this to happen; it just needs to include BRANDCRUMB hyperlink tags, which might load a click tracker or impression pixel instead.


Notifying users about cookies.

All publishers must clearly display a privacy policy by notifying visitors about the site’s use of cookies. In addition, all publishers must comply with applicable laws regarding the collection of information from site visitors.


BRANDCRUMB has taken appropriate measures to protect information from unauthorised or unlawful access, use or transfer, and against accidental loss, damage or destruction. Access to data is restricted to authorised personnel.

Opting out

The users can choose to opt out of BRANDCRUMB data collection process. The user can activate the opt out option by clicking the button in this section. Once the user opts out BRANDCRUMB will not collect any navigation data and will not profile the user.  BRANDCRUMB opting out does not prevent the user from receiving online ads. The advertising could be profiled by other data provider or served randomly.

The BRANDCRUMB opt out process stores a specific cookie on users’ browser. This cookie has to be downloaded on each computer and each browser used by users. If cookies are disabled, erased, or altered, or if browsers or operating systems are modified or upgraded, the opt-out process might need to be performed again.

Alternatively, if you wish to opt out of using cookies, you can configure your browser and can block some or all the cookies.

The way to opt out of cookies for each major browser is show below:

Google Chrome:

  • Click on the Chrome menu situated in the tool bar of the browser.
  • Select Settings.
  • Click on Show Advanced Options.
  • In the Privacy section, clink on Content Settings button.
  • Select the adjustments you wish to make.
  • Click on X to close.

Mozilla Firefox:

  • Select Tools in the menu and then Options.
  • Click on the Privacy tab.
  • Select the adjustments you wish to make.
  • Click on OK.

Apple Safari:

  • Select Safari in the menu, then Preferences.
  • Click on the Privacy panel.
  • Select the adjustments you wish to make.
  • Click on X to close.

Microsoft Internet Explorer  6/7/8 (Windows XP/Vista)

  • Select Tools in the menu and then Internet Options.
  • Click on the Privacy tab.
  • Select the adjustments you wish to make.
  • Click on OK.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 8/9 (Windows 7):

  • Click on the Settings icon (in upper right corner).
  • Click on Internet Options.
  • Click on Privacy and select your options.
  • Click on Apply and then on OK.
